Invisalign Tips

Many people know that Invisalign is a great solution to braces if you don't want to experience the look and feel of traditional metal braces. What few people know, though, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. Good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, ask yourself the following questions:

1.) Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.
2.) Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.
3.) Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits.

Have a happy and safe New Year!

Dr. Elchahal and staff, helping disadvantaged families this holiday season

Dr. Elchahal and staff are sponsoring a family this holiday season through North Fulton Community Charities. The NFCC Holiday Program provides an opportunity for disadvantaged families to experience the blessings of the season and put aside their day-to-day struggles.

Sponsoring a family involves purchasing new gifts for each child in the family and a household gift the whole family can enjoy. Sponsors receive a letter about their family, a report with the children's names, ages and sizes and the children's wish list for Christmas. With this information, Dr. Elchahal and his team can then purchase items or gift cards of their choosing.

We feel blessed being able to help this family during the holidays.

Preparing for Cold and Flu Season

Traditionally cold and flu season starts in Fall, but this year it seems to have started much earlier and with the number of patients canceling appointments because of flu and H1N1 symptoms our practice is taking additional precautions to help prevent the spread of germs.

To promote a healthy clean environment, we give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our office at all times as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces.

For the protection of other patients and staff, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

Maintaining and protecting oral hygiene equipment is also important this flu season. To protect your toothbrush from bacteria follow these steps:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace toothbrush after every cold or flu or every 3-4 months when bristles appear worn

The Importance of Retainers

You've done your time, your teeth are impeccably straight, and your braces can come off! You're free!

...Now, what's this about a retainer?

Most of our patients who've spent time in braces need to wear a retainer after their braces are removed. A retainer is a small, curved piece of plastic and metal that we custom-create to fit inside your mouth. Its job is to hold your teeth in their new position.

Why Do I Need a Retainer?
Imagine you've built a sandcastle on the beach. You spent a lot of time on that sandcastle, and you want to protect it so you and your friends can admire your creation. How do you keep that castle from falling down? You take special precaution to build it far away from any water (or tricky big brothers) that could rush in and ruin all your hard work.

It's the same thing with your teeth. We've worked together for months - years, maybe - to bring your teeth into perfect alignment, and we don't want to see them lapse back into crookedness. So we take a special precaution to enforce their new position. And that special precaution is wearing a retainer.

When - And For How Long - Should I Wear My Retainer?

Just like everyone's teeth are different, everyone has different schedules and timelines for wearing a retainer. When we remove your braces and create your very own special retainer, we will let you know how often you need to wear it. We will also let you know how long you need to wear it. Research has shown that teeth often get progressively more crooked with age, so the longer you wear your retainer, the better a chance you have of keeping that perfect smile. The important thing is to carefully follow our instructions, because we have designed your retainer schedule based on exactly what your teeth need to stay in place.

Will It Feel Weird?
Remember back when you first got braces and your mouth felt a little different? Then once you got used to them, you forgot they were there. You learned how to talk with braces, you learned how to eat with braces, you learned how to smile with braces. You will do the same thing with a retainer, and soon you'll forget it's there. And because a retainer takes up less space in your mouth than braces, it'll be even easier this time.

Will It Look Weird?
Quite the contrary: we can make retainers in many different colors and sometimes we can even put special pictures on them. You get to choose how you want it to look.

How Do I Take Care of My Retainer?
It's easy to take care of your retainer. When you take it out to brush your teeth, simply clean it with your toothbrush and toothpaste. And when you are not wearing your retainer, be sure to keep it in its plastic case to avoid damaging it.
Are All Retainers Removable?

Sometimes we place a "bonded" or permanently fixed retainer on your lower front teeth. These teeth are the most prone to becoming crooked again, so having a retainer you can't lose or remove often pays off in a big way. If you have a bonded retainer, make sure to brush it thoroughly and floss between the teeth it holds straight daily.

What If I Lose My Retainer?

Because a retainer can be an expensive item, it's best to avoid losing one. The most common way that retainers are lost is during a meal. A patient removes his retainer to eat, wraps it in a napkin, and puts it on his lunch tray in the cafeteria - then promptly forgets it's there. Where does it end up? You guessed it: in the garbage. Ew! Trust us, you don't want to dig through cafeteria garbage. So don't lose track of your retainer. Ask us about our retainer insurance!

What If My Retainer Breaks?
If your retainer breaks or is lost, please call us immediately so we can create a replacement for you. Going without your retainer, even for a few days, can affect the alignment of your teeth.

Cash for Candy with Dr. Elchahal!

Dr. Elchahal is redefining the phrase "put your money where your mouth is." This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Dr. Elchahal's offices in Johns Creek or Hamilton Mill and receive cash back per pound. Dr. Elchahal is leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars in exchange for cavity-provoking candy.

"Ditch the candy, that's what we're saying. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost," says Dr. Alec Elchahal. "Kids can still have all the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well."

Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2% annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children's teeth, can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces.

Candy will be collected at Dr. Elchahal's office the week after Halloween on November 2nd at the Johns Creek office and on November 3rd at the Hamilton Mill office between the hours of 8am-5pm. The candy must be unopened. Please no bites. It will then be shipped to a local charity. Dr. Elchahal and team are available to provide more information at 770-622-1177 or visit our website at www.smilesbyelchahal.com.

Why Is It So Important To Have Straight Teeth? Dr. Elchahal explains

Some people wonder why we work so hard to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque – the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, give us a call at 678-894-7818 to set up a consultation. Dr. Elchahal can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Keeping a Healthy Smile with Dr. Elchahal

It is important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen throughout treatment because braces can create small ledges, nooks and crannies for food deposits, which can lead to cavities and gum problems. This makes brushing and flossing even more important while you are wearing braces. Brushing and flossing, preferably after every meal and snack, is the best way to prevent plaque build-up, tooth decay and gum disease. If you are looking for specific tips for good oral hygiene while in orthodontic treatment, leave a comment on this blog, or head over to the Dr. Elchahal Facebook fan page and leave a response!

Back To School Means Extra Care for Your Braces, From Dr. Elchahal

It may be summer, but fall is fast approaching. Here are a few tips from Dr. Elchahal about protecting your teeth and braces during all your activities!

Playing Sports with Braces

We recommend that you protect your teeth during orthodontic treatment by wearing a mouthguard when participating in any contact sports. You can purchase mouthguards at our office that are designed to be worn with braces. Be warned, some mouthguards do not work well with braces, so consult us first!

Playing a Musical Instrument with Braces

For those of you in band, some instruments (most wind instruments) have an initial adjustment period while in orthodontic treatment.

Always exercise care with your braces, if you are worried about damaging them in a particular activity, ask us first!

What’s so special about an Orthodontist? Dr. Elchahal Explains

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" At Dr. Elchahal's offices, we hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming an orthodontist Dr. Elchahal started out in dental school and earned a DDS (dental degree), just like your dentist. After dental school however, Dr. Elchahal decided he wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So he stayed in school for a few more years and became an expert in orthodontics; which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Isn't it nice to know there's a dental expert here to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

Meet Dr. Elchahal

Hello, my name is Dr. Alec Elchahal. My goal in life is to bring more stunning smiles to Atlanta, Georgia, and I’ve decided it’s time to reach out join the social networking ranks. I’m excited to connect on a more personal level with patients and friends!

Now for a little bit about me: I love food of all kinds, but I especially enjoy Thai cuisine. One of my favorite pastimes is trying new restaurants. Currently, my top picks in Atlanta are Nan and Vinny’s. I also really like Cinco’s in Alpharetta.

Perhaps my love of food has led to my love of travel, or perhaps it is the other way around. Either way, I like exploring new regions and tasting all kinds of culinary delights. Some of the best places I have ever visited are Brazil, Italy, and Tahiti. I love the beaches and the people, and did I mention the food?

Sometimes I want a vacation but I don’t want to leave the Atlanta area, so I stay and enjoy the city as if I were a tourist – a “staycation”. Hands down my favorite spot to staycation in Atlanta is the W Hotel in Buckhead. It’s particularly fun when the Braves are in town during my stay and I can cheer on my favorite Atlanta sports team.

When I am in the mood for some down time, I love relaxing with my family. My wife, Marlo, and I have two beautiful children, Ryan and Lilya. We enjoy watching movies together, and all-time winners in my book are Braveheart and Legends of the Fall. I also always enjoy listening to some good acoustic guitar.

If you think of anything else you want to know, just ask, and thanks for stopping by!
